Asriel receives a grant for another expedition. Asriel later gives a presentation to other scholars regarding his discovery that Dust existing in the North Pole links infinite worlds. When Asriel returns to Oxford, Lyra saves his life after seeing a visiting Magisterium agent spike his wine with an unidentified poison. Her uncle, Lord Asriel, a noted explorer and scholar, has been absent seeking the elusive Dust, a cosmic particle that the Magisterium forbids to be mentioned. Lyra Belacqua, whose dæmon is named Pantalaimon or "Pan", is an orphan being raised at Jordan College in Oxford. Witches, however, have bird-shape dæmons that are able to travel long distances from their bodies. The dæmon communicates with the person and must remain in close physical proximity. In this world, every person's inner spirit partially exists outside the body, manifesting itself as an animal companion called a dæmon. In an alternate Earth, a powerful church called the Magisterium strictly controls the populace's beliefs and teachings. Although the film's visual effects (which Weitz has called the film's "most successful element") won both an Oscar and a BAFTA, critical reception of the film was mixed and its revenue was lower than the studio had anticipated. The studio ordered significant changes late in post-production, which Weitz later called a "terrible" experience. Lyra joins a tribe of seafarers on a trip to the far North, the land of the armoured polar bears, in search of the missing children.īefore its release, the film received criticism from many quarters, including both secularist organisations for the omitting criticisms of religion – a central theme of His Dark Materials – and religious organisations due to the source material's anti-religious themes.
Children in that universe are being kidnapped by an unknown group called the Gobblers who are supported by the Magisterium.

The film depicts the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, an orphan living in a parallel universe where a dogmatic ruling power called the Magisterium opposes free inquiry. At US$180 million, it was one of New Line Cinema's most expensive projects ever, and its disappointing results in the US contributed to New Line's February 2008 restructuring.
The project was announced in February 2002, but difficulties over the script and the selection of a director caused significant delays. Written and directed by Chris Weitz, it stars Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green and Ian McKellen. Guess we’ll have to wait and see if this one turns out to be true. The Golden Compass is a 2007 fantasy adventure film based on the 1995 book Northern Lights (which is titled “The Golden Compass” in North America), the first novel in Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. I really enjoyed how he handled About A Boy and I don’t think Compass turned out as badly as it could have. Personally, I think that if this rumor is true, it’s not a bad pick at all. These people are absolutely insane about these books, and I’m pretty sure if you screw up their story, they’ll put a Boba Fett sized price on your head… or they’ll just kill you with their own hands. Wow… if this guy was afraid of The Golden Compass fans… he should probably fear for his life from the Twilight fans. On December 15, 2004, Weitz announced his resignation as director of the trilogy, citing the enormous technical challenges of the epic and later admitting he was worried about dissing by the book’s fans. But let’s also not forget Weitz’s behavior on Golden Compass.

The source tells me Weitz is “still considering” the offer to helm New Moon and possibly also Eclipse if the sequel and threequel movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s series of vampire books are made back-to-back. But my insider says another reason it came down is because Weitz and Summit’s president of production Eric Feig are longtime pals. I don’t have official confirmation yet that this Twilight sequel offer has gone out to Weitz. The following comes from Deadline Hollywood: The rumor going around right now is that the director of “The Golden Compass”, Chris Weitz (who also directed “About a Boy” which I thought was wonderful) has been offered the gig for both Twilight 2 and 3 (which are rumored to be shooting back to back. So ever since then the question has been… who will direct Twilight 2? So last week the studio and Hardwicke jointly announced (rather suspiciously I might add) that Hardwicke would not be returning to the sequel do to a scheduling conflict (yeah right). Yes it met with some critical abuse… but when the film makes big money that usually doesn’t matter. Twilight made truck loads of money and because the highest opening weekend box office take of any film directed by a woman in history.
It was pretty shocking to me when I heard the news that Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke, would not be returning to direct the sequel.
